Background of Organisation

The National Farmers' Union represents the farmers and growers of England (and Wales). NFU has been at the forefront of farming and rural issues for nearly one hundred years. It was was founded in 1908 and is financed by members' subscriptions. We are not affiliated to any political party and have a completely democratic structure.

The NFU is the largest farming organisation in the UK, representing around three quarters of the full time commercial farmers of England (and Wales).

Organisational Objectives

Its central objective is to promote successful and socially responsible agriculture and horticulture, while ensuring the long term viability of rural communities.Moreover NFU aims to:

  • To continue to work to ensure that the food you eat is safe, affordable and of the highest possible quality;
  • To maintain a beautiful countryside and to meet the challenge of producing wholesome, high quality food while protecting wildlife and the environment;
  • To promote the interests of those farming businesses producing high quality food and drink products for customers and markets both at home and abroad;
  • To Encourage environmentally-friendly and welfare conscious farming practices and a desire to ensure the long term survival of viable rural communities.
