What is the Severn Estuary Flood Risk Management Strategy

The Strategy is the Environment Agency's plan to manage tidal flood risks in the Severn Estuary. It covers the coast from Gloucester to Lavernock Point near Cardiff and from Gloucester to Hinkley Point in Somerset.

The three main objectives of the strategy are:

  • to define a 100 year plan of investment for flood defences by the Environment Agency and local authorities
  • to prioritise other flood risk management measures such as providing advice to utility companies to protect critical infrastructure, development control advice and flood warning investment
  • to decide where we should create new inter-tidal wildlife habitats to compensate for losses of habitat caused by rising sea levels

It covers the coast from Gloucester to Lavernock Point near Cardiff and from Gloucester to Hinkley Point in Somerset.

Following the consultation on our draft strategy in early 2011, the Environment Agency is now reviewing and assessing the responses received from stakeholders. In the meantime, we will not implement the draft strategy as it stands.

The publications section of this site was last updated on 21st December 2011, with statements by Richard Cresswell (Environment Agency Director of the South West Region, and project sponsor for the Severn Estuary Flood Risk Management Strategy), pertaining to the Gloucester and Wessex regions affected.
